A Practical Guide to the Law

There are a few common sense tips on how to further reduce the risk of being attacked:

  • Avoid short-cuts and dark alleys, especially at night
  • Head for a busy public place if you suspect you're being followed
  • Walk facing the traffic, so cars cannot pull up behind you unnoticed
  • Don't be fooled by a casual request for a cigarette or for change
  • Never accept a lift from a stranger
  • Vary your route if you regularly go out jogging
  • Always carry a personal attack alarm, available from DIY stores

All migrant workers have the same rights for the full protection of the law, to live free from crime, harassment and intimidation. If you need to contact an officer, an interpreter will be provided free of charge. To find the nearest police station please check http://www.police.uk/

Some migrant workers might need to register with local police.

Your passport will be endorsed on entry to the UK if you are required to register. Each police force has a department that deals with foreign nationals and listed below are countries whose nationals are generally required to register. This list is not exhaustive and any foreign national can be required to register with the police if it is considered necessary by the relevant authorities.

Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Palestine, Peru, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yemen.
